Public Works
The Department of Public Works includes the maintenance, alterations, improvement, and repair of streets, sidewalks, sewers, sewage disposal facilities, water mains, water facilities, and all other public grounds, buildings, facilities, and equipment, plus other duties.
Director of Public Works, Steve Lowder, is a Bangor Native who has dedicated many of his years to serving the community as a Fire Fighter and EMT. Steve holds a Water and Sewer operator license and manages the City’s water and sewer infrastructure. He also oversees all Department of Public Works employees who maintain city streets, sidewalks, parks, cemeteries, equipment, and utilities. Bangor’s public works employees are dedicated individuals working in all weather conditions to ensure utilities are available around the clock.
Department of Public Works services include:
- Water – drinking water treatment, water distribution system, and the fire hydrant replacement program
- Sewer – collection system, treatment lagoons, and storm water
- Major Streets – major streets and state trunk line assistance; including routine and winter maintenance, bridges, traffic services, etc.; plus street closures for parades and festivals; the City Manager is the Act 51 Street Administrator
- Local Streets – local streets and alleys; including routine and winter maintenance, bridges, traffic services, etc.; plus street closures for parades and festivals; the City Manager is the Act 51 Street Administrator
- Parks – operation and maintenance only, park improvements occur through recommendation by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, as decided by the City Council
- Cemetery – grounds keeping, pouring foundations in the spring and fall, and burials; City Hall administrates with guidance from the Cemetery Committee
- Grounds Services – includes mowing/trimming and snow/ice removal around City owned public buildings, cemetery properties, the DPW property, or utility properties, i.e., City Hall, the City library building, and City owned off-street parking and open space properties
- Downtown Services – includes downtown trash collection, downtown light pole banner changing, and other work if approved for payment by the DDA Board
- Courtesy Services – includes brush collection, leaf collection, and fall and spring trash collection
